Is the universe responsive to our thoughts and needs? Does a force beyond our comprehension—God, Source, Energy, or whatever you wish to call him, her, or it—send us messages?
Psychoanalyst Carl Jung formed the theory of synchronicity after treating a woman who had recurrent, disturbing dreams about a particular species of scarab beetle. The woman wasn’t making much therapeutic progress, but one day during a session, Jung heard a scratching at his window. Pulling back the curtain, he saw the exact kind of scarab beetle the woman had been describing—only the species wasn’t indigenous to the area. The woman was so impressed that she was finally able to get at the root of her problem. Jung began to speculate on the “non-random coincidence,” in which normal cause and effect doesn’t seem to be responsible for events.
Have you ever met someone from the past after thinking about him or her for no reason? Did he or she have some bit of information you needed to know? Has a song come on the radio (or a movie on TV) that was pertinent to some issue in your life? Have you ever taken a wrong turn in the car, only to find yourself somewhere that is more important than your original destination? Have you ever met someone on an airplane who had the exact same childhood experiences as you?
I once wrote a story that took place in Greenwich Village on Mercer Street. After finishing the story, I received a phone call—a wrong number—from Mercerville, New Jersey. There are about 5 billion telephones in the U.S., counting cell phones and company lines. A week later, I went to a bookstore to buy the Writers Digest Poet’s Market. The book was on the floor, open to the page listing a poetry journal published by Mercerville Community College in Mercerville, New Jersey. One of the poets listed as a past contributor to the journal had the same last name as a character in my story.
Quantum physics says that matter is influenced—or responsive—to the position of the observer. (It’s called Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle.) Physics also says everything is bound together by a single, unifying energy. It’s as if we’re all on a cosmic conference call, but we have to listen carefully to hear the right speaker.
I started keeping a journal of unusual coincidences in my life. Some seemed to point me in a certain direction, while others remained a mystery. My journal is still active.
Do we get messages from the universe? If you wish to test this hypothesis, simply get paper and pen and then start paying attention to the people, places, and things around you.

While it is fun and groovy to imagine such is so, a more pedestrian (and much more highly probable) explanation is that evolution has rewarded the pattern seeking abilities in man and that we humans are just good at connecting disparate, random dots...
For all of the synchronous that we notice, just think of the billions of thoughts and "stuff" that does not align, and that we never notice...
Perhaps we are even more random than we think?
Anna-lys, glad you liked it. Hope your sleep was refreshing.
Scott, I don't think Jung said everything is non-random, so yes, we do have billions of events that are not necessarily synchronistic. By the same token, how many people are paying attention? I confess my bent for mysticism, however. Pardon me--I have to go levitate now -:)
An interesting read Billy, but I always think that everybody has a guardian angel. Maybe it's the same concept as an universal pull. I don't know. All that I know is that my guardian angel has saved me from several disasters.
Monique, I too believe in those wonderful higher beings. I think they both save and enlighten.
Your Mercer St. string of synchronisities is quite impressive!
I don't think I've been listening hard enough and am going to keep a 'coincidence journal' forthwith:-)
I'm going to have to think about this some more. Thought provoking as always - thank you:-)
oh I didn't experience it when i was young but in the last 10 years up untill a year ago, so often that it couldn't be coincedence anymore. I might write about it someday as well because they are sometimes quite extra ordinairy. I talked about it with somebody years ago when I hadn't heard about synchronisity and she gave me a book about it. So it wasn't strange after all. There are higher powers working.
It was more than a matter of selective perception to what I was looking .
Didn't experience it at all lately so i must be on the wrong track at the moment
Lane, it's an intriguing subject for me. Some things seem to be beyond statistical probability. If nothing else, such a journal is fun.
Marja, I've noticed in my own life that they seem to come and go. I guess we have to be "tuned in," which I think is the reason for meditation--to silence the mind so that it can really hear.
Anna-lys, no I'm not closing the post or our dialogue. Sorry if it seemed that way :-D. (I put up another post because I've found that people stop reading or subscribing if I don't put out something new once in a while.) Anyway ... I think that our views aren't necessarily exclusive. We ourselves may indeed generate the synchronicities because we have needs at the present moment, but then I think that the universe may respond to those needs. If we ourselves are part of Jung's "collective unconscious," then I think we're almost in a feedback loop if we are expecting to receive messages. Maybe? ... LOL -:)
Anna-lys, yes, "attuned" or "tuned in" is a good way to put it, I think. Whatever triggers the synchronicity, if such critters do really exist, then they are blended into the fabric of everyday life, which makes them hard to hear. I guess I should be chanting "om," eh? LOL. Hope you got my previous response. Didn't mean to cut short the post or responses.
I like your second last response It all starts to make sense to me.
Strange that their is an unconcious communication going on, but this is the most plausable explanation for it.
Marja, I too think it's plausible--thanks--although many of my friends think I'm nuts. As Marilyn Ferguson said in The Aquarian Conspiracy many years ago, there is a new paradigm of higher consciousness evolving. Much is unchartered water, but that's what this long evolutionary climb is for: discovery.
"The Internut." LOL I like that, Anna!
These coincidences happen to me all the time. I never thought to keep a notebook of them, though. That's a cool idea.
The most recent coincidence was a few minutes ago as I looked through your blog and saw the entry about cell memory. I only learned of the concept last week when a friend mentioned it and told me that because my father was an organ donor, parts of his memories and thoughts may still live on. I immediately pictured a bunch of people overnight becoming Ohio State football fans and developing an urge to wear gray and scarlet together.
Shauna, that is an incredible synchronicity indeed--about the organ donations and how you were just thinking of something similar. Maybe something is indeed telling you that there are new Ohio football fans out there. I hope so :)
Hi Billy -
I linked to you via William Ackerman.
I have a Martin 00-16DBR, and need no other guitar.
I share many of your interests in books & movies, as well.
Regarding synchronicity,I believe that is the basis for casting the I Ching, which I do regularly.
Enjoyed your site.
Regards,
Nalton
Nalton, thanks for stopping by. I have a lot of William Ackerman on vinyly. He's realy good!!! Glad you enjoyed the post. I'll be sure to check out your blog.
